Ancestors of Richard Pittam

Residing now in South Derbyshire, the family lived in Silverstone, Northamptonshire, from about 1760 onwards. Prior to that it is not clear whether the family came from Northants or from Buckinghamshire, this is the current thrust of my researches.

Shown below are details of my researches together with photographs of relatives, where available. The family tree is shown in the form of a Descendants report, as produced by genealogy software package "Brother's Keeper".

Reasons for William meeting Mary D uncertain, possible link to soldier/career. Marriage Licence names a William Holdick as proposer, fromMarston Trussel. Marriage Licence £200. Holdick was a farmer and William Pittam was a labourer, perhaps he worked for him, although M.Trussel approx 20 miles from Silverstone. No records found of William Pittam in any Censuses, as he died in 1840 and no earlier Censuses in Northants survive.

Mary Darlow (b.1794) Reputedly born in Foxton Leicestershire but unable to trace baptism in Foxton or surrounding parishes, although Foxton records poor. First appears in 1841 Census of Silverstone living in ??iples Hills House with 8 children, as a Lacemaker. Children are Charlotte, Sarah, Elizabeth, Emele (later called Amelia), Joseph(b.1829), Ann, Mary and Thomas. 3 CHARLOTTE PITTAM b. CIRCA 1816 d. 1886

(great-great-great aunt)

Charlotte Pittam (b.1816)

First found in 1841 Census of Silverstone, living at ?? Hills House with her mother Mary, her 2 brothers Joseph (b.1829) and Thomas (b.1838) and 5 of her sisters. Next found in the 1851 Census of Silverstone living with her mother, Mary, the precise address not given. Later found in 1861 (Silverstone) living with her mother Mary, in Gravel Walk, which is now a footpath linking High Street to the village square. The houses have since been knocked down, but some remnants of them still exist, as part of the new property boundaries, overlooking fields. Charlotte was found in the 1881 (Silverstone) Census living with her widowed sister Elizabeth Wooton (Betsy), and her son Richard Wooton. Both Charlotte and Betsy were noted as being Annuitants, which means they receive an annual income from a private investment. This could have come from the will of Betsy's husband, Matthew Wooton, who died in 1862, although this has not been substantiated yet. As far as records currently researched show, Charlotte did not marry or have any children.

3 JOSEPH PITTAM b. CIRCA 1819 m. 24 Feb 1851 CAROLINE MAYCOCK b. circa 1830

(great-great-great uncle)

Joseph Pittam (b.1819) Not much known of Joseph so far. He does not appear in any Censuses so far researched. Apparently he was a soldier for some of his life, but in which Regiment or in which campaign, it is not known. Wife Caroline died in 1854. From St Caths Indexes there are 3 references to Joseph's Death, 1857 (Towcester), 1868 (Northampton) and 1870 (Towcester), all of which are possibles.

3 CAROLINE PITTAM b. CIRCA 1820 d. 1879 m. 9 Aug 1841 WILLIAM PITTAM b. circa 1808

(great-great-great aunt)

Caroline Pittam (b.1820) First found in 1851 Silverstone Census with husband William Pittam and their children. Also in the household were a lodger Eliza Coleman, aged 32, unmarried and a Lacemaker and her possible son John Coleman, aged 6. Husband William died in 1854 and Caroline was found in 1861 Silverstone Census as a Widow in Cock Shoot End, with her children. Also present was a Lodger Alfred Baldwin, aged 22 and a Steam Mill Sawyer. Caroline was also found in the 1871 Silverstone Census at the same address, living with youngest daughter Selina.

First found in the 1841 Census of Silverstone, living with her mother Mary, 2 of her brothers Joseph (b.1829) and Thomas (b.1838), and 5 of her sisters. She has not as yet been found anywhere else.

3 ELIZABETH PITTAM b. CIRCA 1825 m. 19 Nov 1850 MATTHEW WOOTON b. Circa 1812

(great-great-great aunt)

Elizabeth Pittam (b.1825)

First found in the 1841 Census of Silverstone, living at ?? Hills house with her mother Mary, 2 of her brothers Joseph (b.1829) and Thomas (b.1838) and 5 of her sisters. Next found in the 1851 Census of Silverstone, on Mumwell Lane, living with husband Matthew Wooton and their first two children, William Pitt and Ellen. Matthew Wooton was described as a labourer. Matthew died in 1862 leaving Elizabeth with 5 children. Also found in 1871 (Silverstone) Census, living in Gravel Walk with mother Mary and sister Charlotte. Next found in 1881 (Silverstone) living with Charlotte, both as Annuitants.

4 WILLIAM PITT WOOTON/WLLM GEORGE PITTAM b. 1848 m. *UNKNNOWN ANN ELIZABETH ???? b. CIR 1849

(first cousin, thrice removed)

William Pitt Wooton or William G Pittam b.1848

Most probable that he was born of Elizabeth Pittam (b.1825) as an illegitimate child. Elizabeth Pittam did not marry Matthew Wooton until 19th November 1850 in Silverstone. In the 1851 Census of Silverstone Matthew, his wife Elizabeth and their two children, William Pitt Wooton and Eliza Wooton, were noted as living on Mumwell Lane. William was noted as being 3 years old at the time of the census, which would make his birth as approx 1848, and also before his mother was married. In the 1861 census of Silverstone we find Matthew and Elizabeth Wooton living at Hall End Road, with their apparent Son-in-Law William G Pittam, noted as aged 13. He could not be a son in law as none of their children were old enough to be married. His age also commutes back to a birth date of 1848 again. I think that she had him and baptised him with her own name Pittam, then when she married Matthew they changed his name to Wooton and disguised his age to all except the Census Enumerator, and when he was 13 he or they decided that he should take back his mothers maiden name Pittam. The figures all add up and the possible reasons add up but the exact truth may never be known. He next appears in the 1871 Census of Linton, shown as boarding with Thomas and Martha Emma Pittam at a farmhouse on Linton Heath. He is shown as married to an Elizabeth and they have a daughter Jane aged 4 years. He is not shown as being related to Thomas but one wonders why he was there if not related, which also supports the theory that he is the nephew of Thomas, or that Thomas is his uncle. He next appears in the 1881 Census of Silverstone, Northamptonshire, with his wife Elizabeth and there five(5) children. These were Mary C Pittam (b.cir 1872), John Pittam (b. cir 1874), Thomas Pittam (b. cir 1876), Harriet Pittam (b. cir 1878) and Sarah Pittam (b. cir 1880). Also in the house was Jane Liddington, noted as William's sister-in-law. This could make William's wife Liddington by maiden name. There is strangely no mention of Florence Annie (b. cir 1878/9), but it is thought that she died cir 1899 in Potterspury. Next door is family whose Head is a John Liddington, perhaps Elizabeth's brother.

William is next found in the 1891 Census of Silverstone, living with his wife Elizabeth (42) and 8 children. These are John (b. cir 1873/4), Florence A (b. cir 1878/9), Sarah A (b. cir 1880), Fances M (b. cir 1882/3), May L (b. cir 1884/5), Frederick (b. 1886), Ada (b. cir 1888) and George (b. cir 1890). Interestingly, John is noted as being born in Swadlincote Derbyshire, and is shown as being a houseboy. They are all living on Brackley Road.

3 AMELIA/Emele PITTAM b. CIRCA 1827

(great-great-great aunt)

Amelia Pittam (b.1827)

First appears in 1841 Census of Silverstone, living with mother Mary together with brothers Joseph(b.1829) and Thomas (b.1838) and 5 of her sisters. Name noted as Emele and not Amelia, possible confusion or different person, although names and dates found in future documents tally quite well. Not much known of Amelia/Emele. Possible marriage to George Maycock (of Green's Norton) in 1845, although name given as Emala, aged 19 (gives birth as 1826/7 though), father listed as William and present at the Church an Elizabeth Pittam ( Elizabeth Pittam of William Pittam not married until 1850). If this is not Amelia Pittam then only death record found up to 1901 in St Caths Index is 1869 (Greenwich).

3 JOSEPH PITTAM b. 1829 d. 1905 m. 5 Apr 1855 MATILDA ADKINS b. Circa 1831 d. 1886

(great-great-grand father)

Joseph Pittam (b.1829)

First found in 1841 Census of Silverstone, living at ?? Hills House, with mother, brother Thomas and 6 sisters. Next found in 1851 Census of Silverstone, living on West End, with mother Mary, sisters Charlotte, Caroline and Mary and Younger brother Thomas. Also living there are Joseph's first wife Ann (nee ????) and their daughter Jane aged 6 months. No record found of their marriage, but possible birth of Jane Pitham in 1850 (Rugby). Possible death record for Jane Pittam in 1855 (Towcester). Neither Ann nor Jane are found with Joseph again, so possibility of Divorce, Annulment being investigated. Joseph married again in 1855 to Matilda Adkins and was recorded as a Bachelor not a Widower. Joseph not found in 1861 Censuses to date, but because two of their children born in Lillingstone Dayrell, just across the county border into Buckinghamshire, then it is possible they were living there. Found in 1871 living at the Lodge Silverstone, although the precise location of this is as yet unknown. With him were his wife Matilda and their nine children. Joseph was an Agricultural Labourer. Next found in the 1881 Census of Silverstone still at The Lodge, with wife Matilda, sons William, Jabez, Ephraim and Benjamin, and daughter Clara. Also at the house was his Grand Daughter Louisa Gardner, aged 12, daughter of Augusta, Joseph's eldest daughter. In the 1891 Census of Silverstone Joseph was found as Widowed and living with his son Ephraim and Ephraim's wife Annie (nee ????), aged 20.

Found in 1891 Silverstone Census, living at Sp???stin Road Silverstone (place not known) with first wife Mary Ann (nee ????) and their four children. From discussions with close relatives, there is a possibility of a second wife Zilla or Priscilla ????, but no evidence of this has yet been found. Possible death of Mary Ann Pittam in 1894 (Towcester) aged 36 years. This ties in to her estimated birth date of 1858 from 1891 Census information. Possible second marriage of Joseph is found in 1898 ( Northampton).

(great-grand mother)

Mary Ann Pittam (b.1865) First appears in 1871 Silverstone Census living with father Joseph and mother Matilda, at The Lodge. Is not found living with her parents in the 1881 Silverstone Census, despite only being 16 years old. Next appears in 1891 Church Gresley Census in Hastings Road, living with husband Charles Henry Price Pittam, and his parents Thomas and Martha Emma and their family. Mary Ann later lived at 70 Stanhope Road Swadlincote with her son Charles Percy Pittam and his family. Mary Ann died in Caddished Manchester in 1945/6 and is buried in the cemetery on Liverpool Road Irlam.

Charles Henry Price Pittam (b.1865) First appears in 1881 Church Gresley Census living in Hastings Road with father Thomas, mother Martha Emma and family. Noted as a Finisher of Sewage Pipes. It is noted that Charles Henry was born in Birmingham and that he was aged 15 years. Charles birth certificate showed no father so technically he was an illegitimate child of Martha Emma Pittam (nee Price), hence one of his names being Price. Charles' father is thought to be someone in authority from Woodwards Pottery but this cannot be substantiated. Next appears on the 1891 Church Gresley Census living in Hastings Road with his parents and his wife Mary Ann Pittam ( nee Pittam ). Mary Ann was the daughter of Joseph Pittam (b.1829) and therefore the cousin of Charles Henry. He is noted as being a Potters Setter. This is significant because he died in 1915 of Potters Asthma with Tuberculosis Lung Dropsy, most likely a form of Industrial Disease through working with Clay and Silica dust for many years.

3 THOMAS PITTAM b. 6 Sep 1838 d. 6 Aug 1924 m. 8 Jan 1867 MARTHA EMMA PRICE b. 6 May 1846

(great-great-great uncle and great-great-great grandfather)

Thomas Pittam (b.1838) First appear in 1841 Census of Silverstone living with mother, 6 sisters and 1 brother. Next appears in 1851 Silverstone Census living with widowed mother and brother Joseph and sisters Charlotte, Caroline and Mary, and sister in law Ann and niece Jane. At 12 he was noted as a Labourer, possibly Agricultural. Next appears in 1861 Silverstone Census, living in Gravel Walk, with mother and sister Charlotte, still noted as a labourer. Married Martha Emma Price in 1867 in Ashby De la Zouch Leicestershire. Found in 1871 Census of Linton living at a farmhouse on Linton Heath. Present in the house were Thomas, Martha Emma his wife, who was described as Emma, children Charles aged 5 and Mary Emma aged 3. Also present in the house were 3 Boarders, William Pittam aged 23, a general labourer, his wife Elizabeth, aged 22 and their daughter Jane Pittam, aged 4. All three were described as being born in Silverstone Northants. It is not known at present who this family was as no records currently researched point to their origin. Found in 1881 Census of Church Gresley, living in Hastings Road ( Landsdowne Terrace), noted as a Burner of Sewage Pipes. Quite how he came to be living in Church Gresley at this time, is not certain, but a possibility is that of his work and also that his cousin Man (Emmanuel Pittam son of John and Lucy Pittam) was already living in Albert Village near Church Gresley. From Census information, birth locations of Thomas and Martha Emma's children range from Ashby Wolds, Linton and Church Gresley. It is known that Martha Emma's father John Price, came from Linton, although he was at that time living in Coppice Side Church Gresley, although relatives may still have lived there. The date at which Thomas himself moved to Derbyshire is still unknown. Thomas, Martha Emma and their family appear in the 1891 Church Gresley Census still in Hastings Road, although it is thought that they now lived in 76 Hastings Road. Thomas is noted as a Potters Drawer and Fireman. Early discussions with close relatives revealed that Thomas was a Groom then Dreyman and later an Under Gardener at Woodwards, has yet to be substantiated.

In the 1891 Census Thomas' son Charles Henry Price Pittam was living in the same house, along with his wife and cousin Mary Ann (nee Pittam). It cannot be proved at present if Thomas was the father of Charles Henry, as Charles Henry was born in Aston Manor Birmingham, in 1865, which was almost two years before Thomas and Martha Emma were married. Charles Henry's Birth Certificate showed no father. According to close relatives it appears that Charles Henry's father could have been someone in authority at Woodward Pottery, where Martha's father John Price was Manager. Thomas was apparently asked to marry Martha Emma, quite why is not known. Unfortunately, conjecture is an unsatisfactory method of assessing facts, so until further information becomes available, the question of descent remains a mystery. Thomas and Martha Emma later lived in Wilmot Road ( between the Passage and Hastings Road). Apparently Thomas had an allotment and a Railway Carriage as a shed.

(first cousin, thrice removed and great grandfather)

Mary Ann Pittam (b.1865) First appears in 1871 Silverstone Census living with father Joseph and mother Matilda, at The Lodge. She is not found living with her parents in the 1881 Silverstone Census, despite only being 16 years old.
